Back in the office, collaborators expect to be trusted

While working from home, employees have learned a lot about self-organisation and self-discipline. They expect their leaders to trust them, in an atmosphere of resilience, solidarity and creativity. Are you that kind of leader?

Communicate openly, and people will take part

Be who you can be as a leader, talk and listen to your employees to explore the culture, environment and performance of the company and the people. People want to be respected as human beings and they want to be part of this new generation of working with communication and openness.

Think about output, not effort

Think differently. Think about what’s important for your customer and business. Think about the outputs you need to meet their needs and think differently about how your people need to operate to deliver that and create their best, flexible, tailored working environment… Only the creative, flexible and people-focused will thrive.

People do not accept the old leadership

During the lockdowns, many people learned to make their decisions on themselves … and they will not easily accept the old leadership any longer. The first thing to do is to regain trust. Start to understand the story of your people. Each of them individually, and you will gradually regain the trust that has been gone when they had lost connection with the office during the lockdown.

Do they really need to be in the office?

Should people really go back to the office? Not every job requires the daily drive and traffic jams. Others might – but not always. Let the people explain and agree with each other who needs to be in the office when, and what meetings and tasks are less dependent on the location. That will motivate people to work back for the office – and be in the office when that is really a plus.
